The second largest city in Egypt
is Alexandria, named after its
founder Alexander The Great.
Alexandria is Egypt's most
important port and in ancient
times boasted of having largest
library in the world, which no
longer exists. Alexandria was
the second largest city in the
Roman Empire.
According to a story recorded by
a Roman biographer named
Plutarch, the ancient Greek poet
Homer appeared to Alexander in a
dream describing a city where:
An island set in ocean deep,
Lies off fair Egypt's rich and
fertile land, And the name of
the island is called Pharos.
This was a reference to Pharos'
Lighthouse, which guided ships
and protected the harbor. This
structure was one of the Seven
Wonders
of the Ancient World. |
