Latakia

The Mediterranean Sea offers a nice sandy beach, and a chance to experience the  traditional  fishing, boat building and  seafood  restaurants.

 

Latakia:

Syria's main sea-port on the Mediterranean (186 km southwest of Aleppo). It has retained its importance since ancient times. Latakia was one of the five cities built by Saluqos Nikator.

Ugarit:

It called Ras Shamra in Arabic, goes back to the 7th millennium BC. is located 16 km north of Lattakia.

 

The Castle of Saladin:

Saladin Castle/Chateau de Saone, A feudal family favoured by Tancred, prince of Antioch is located Approx. 35 km to the east of Latakia.

 

Al Marqab Castle:

In Arabic Qalaat Al-Marqab, (the watch castle) is located between Tartous and Latakia. Approx. 6 km south east of Banias.

Tartous:

The second most important Syrian seaport on the Mediterranean (90 km to the south of Latakia). The arches, wall-towers and narrow lanes in Tartus evoke what the twon must have been like in medieval times. A jewel of Romanesque art is the cathedral of Tartus, which is now a museum containing relics from various Syrian civilizations.

 

Arwad Island:

This is the only island in Syria, and it is located 3 km from Tartus Arwad was another important Phoenician city and possessed the best harbour between Tripoli and the mouth of the Orontes.

 

Amrit:

Located 7 km south of Tartous. Scattered ruins of a temple compound an aerodrome and burial chambers which date back to the 4th century BC.

Safita:

Approx. 30 km to the east of Tartus The white tower “Castel Blanc” can be viewed from miles distance on the way to Safita. A major knights Templars stronghold, catured by Sultan Baibrs in 1271..

 

Ras El Basit:

Located on the northern part of the Syrian shore, about 40 km to the north of Latakia, it is one of the most beautiful spots on the Mediterranean: a wide bay, with clear water and clean sand, surrounded by mountains and green hills. Chalets, camping sites and restaurants along the shore make Ras al-Bassit all the more attractive to visitors.
